The Silverstone evolution emerged in 1987: the circuit was heavily modified with a new left-right chicane on the Farm Straight just before Woodcote. Another chicane was installed at the flat-out Abbey corner and Stowe corner was slowed considerably, however it was reverted to its previous design in 1966.

The probable Bronze Age barrow said to be in Silverstone parish and which was excavated in 1940 actually lay just S. of the county boundary, in Buckinghamshire (Ant. J., 28 (1948), 27; W. F. Grimes, Excavations on Defence Sites, 1 (1960), 245–7). The Silverstone Circuit has always been one of the fastest in the world.   Two major overhauls were required to maintain the Grand Prix..  The first was in 1991 and included a new ‘stadium’ area between Abbey and Woodcote as well as new sweeping curves instead of the old Becketts Corner. The world championship for drivers was started in 1950 – and Silverstone had been decided to host the first round. With a crowd of 200,000 in attendance, including King George VI – the race was won by Giuseppe Farina in his Alfa Romeo 158.
