The Human Poverty Index (HPI) was an indication of the poverty of community in a country, developed by the United Nations to complement the Human Development Index (HDI) and was first reported as part of the Human Deprivation Report in 1997. The HDI simplifies and captures only part of what human development entails; it does not reflect on sustainability, inequalities, poverty, empowerment, etc. The 2016 Human Development Report introduced a set of dashboards including Sustainable Development Dashboard which focuses on sustainability in the environmental, economic and social realms. The Human Poverty Index (HPI) was first introduced into the Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1997 in an attempt to bring together in a composite index the different features of deprivation in the quality of life to arrive at an aggregate judgement on the extent of poverty in a community.
